What is Ethics?

Ethics is a substantial part of my second module of my degree. The Programme Handbook (p27) summarises how to conduct research ethically. Taking an ethical approach to research based activity requires one to consider whether it will involve systems, humans, animals or data. The BBC explains that ethics, in its simplest form, is a system of moral principles. The idea of ethics originates from philosophical values that are the foundation of human society. Our morals and decisions can be motivated by ethical approval. Some people may derive their moral values from religion ie the ten commandments, the Qur'an, the Torah.

In relation to my studies, I believe my ethical research will consider the people I use to collect data from, the data I use to find different perspectives on my research and how my research-based inquiry is interconnected with many forms of ethicals. The discovery of ethics has only just begun, and will be an interesting topic to explore alongside my practice. The video below is an effective and visual way to understand the vitality of ethical procedures and considerations.

  1. Hi Serena
Thank you for posting the video on ethics, I found it very helpful to watch and it certainly gives me a lot to think about! I am trying to narrow down potential inquiry topic ideas, but some of the questions I want to explore will be greatly affected by ethical considerations. I think it's especially hard as a dance teacher as so many factors can influence whether a research project is ethical- as the video explained- Class disruptions/ Limiting learning time/ making a student feel uncomfortable or embarassed. Will you be considering all these things when trying to decide on an idea? I'm not sure whether you're hoping to decide on a topic before starting any of the other steps- it's a catch 22 as you need to have an idea to know what to research, but research can then inform an idea! Perhaps it's about not being afraid to change our minds? I've posted below about the start of Module two:

    Thanks again for sharing!
